The Wareable Tech Awards 2017 shortlist was announced earlier this week, offering a perfect opportunity to reflect briefly on the achievements in wearable technology over the past year. Looking at this year’s top devices, compared to last year’s, it is easy to spot a key trend – sophistication. Across the board, 2017 has been a remarkable year in terms of taking the stand-out features of previous devices, making them standard, and building on them.
As expected, Firstbeat powered devices were well-represented amongst the categories, often going head to head with each other, particularly in the sports and fitness categories. All told, Firstbeat powered devices accounted for 11 nominations, up from 5 in 2016, from four different major brands.
Automatic VO2max fitness level detection was a big winner in 2017 with Garmin, Huawei, TomTom and Jabra all working with Firstbeat to help place this key health and performance insight into the hands of people around the world.
Notably, all six of the Garmin devices shortlisted across the different award categories provide users with All-day Stress tracking, a new insight that debuted earlier this year and is powered by Firstbeat’s HRV analysis. Early feedback on this feature has been overwhelmingly positive. It is a good sign for advocates of the idea that the long-term viability of wearable devices will be determined by the impact they can have on daily life, beyond just the world of fitness tracking.
Congratulations and best of luck to everyone involved.
