Firstbeat Sports Introduces Reference Values for Easier Use of Data on the Field

Coaches can now instantly put results into context by comparing them with typical values for their sport or with athletes’ previous training sessions. This makes data immediately actionable on the field.

Firstbeat has launched a new feature in the Firstbeat Sports Coach App that helps coaches interpret measurement data in real time using reference values. These reference values represent typical values seen in their specific sport or individual athlete results from their own history.

This new feature provides instant context for measurement results, enabling coaches to quickly assess how the session compares to typical values in the Firstbeat database or to compare an athlete’s response to their own past results.

Firstbeat has built one of the world’s largest physiology datasets through more than 15 years of work with professional teams across multiple sports, and these exclusive reference values are developed from over 7 million measurements across male and female athletes.

Easier Interpretation of Key Metrics

Measuring has become common across elite and collegiate sports. Interpreting the data has often been challenging and required time and expertise to interpret what the values mean. The new feature makes the results immediately interpretable in the training environment.

Coaches can see how their results compare to easy, moderate, hard or game-specific values in the Firstbeat database. These reference values are built from a large dataset of measurements and define the typical values seen in the metrics like TRIMP, TRIMP/min, Time in HR Zones, Movement load and Movement intensity.

Coaches can also compare their athlete values individually to past results in similar types of training sessions as the athlete-specific data accumulates. Coaches can evaluate whether a given session type produces a typical response, for example, in situations such as Game Day -3.

“Physiological data should be as easy as possible to use by the coaches,” said Tero Myllymäki, Head of Research at Firstbeat. “By leveraging our extensive datasets, we’ve made it possible to help put every training session into context. That means coaches can make more informed decisions on the field and act on data.”

The result is clearer session evaluation and faster decisions while training is still in progress. Coaches can identify unusually high or low responses as they happen and adjust sessions when needed.

Key capabilities include:

  • Real-time configurations for the desired comparisons
  • No prior data or experience required to interpret results
  • Immediate comparison to Firstbeat reference values
  • Athlete-specific comparisons to similar types of training sessions

The new feature is available within Firstbeat Sports for professional teams, collegiate programs, and academies.
